Singing the Delta blues

Where the Lake Becomes the River will be published in October, 2008, by Novello Festival Press.

Kate was invited to speak as a novelist recently at UNC-Chapel Hill for a Writing Careers Night for students. She was expecting only a few students to express interest in fiction writing--given its limitations as a means of making a living--and was pleasantly surprised when forty to fifty enthusiastic students gathered around to ask questions about pursuing their passion for writing fiction and eventually seeking publication. One can only conclude that:

The soul must speak, and longs to be heard.

Whatever the challenges, following one's writing muse will surely lead to unexpected treasures.

McIntyre's Fine Books bookstore at Farrington Village just south of Chapel Hill is a lovely store with a sumptuous selection of hand-picked staff reads, and a wealth of readings through the year by wonderful writers from near and far. They host a monthly open mic night. Kate read there recently, and much enjoyed it (a selection from WHERE THE LAKE BECOMES THE RIVER involving an encounter with a giant snake....while swimming in mud-colored Lake Chickasaw). Other writers shared their work, in a wide variety of forms and styles. Kate will be reading more selections from WHERE THE LAKE in upcoming months.

In the fall, look for a reading at the Regulator Bookstore of Durham, NC, a fine independent bookstore known for supporting local area authors.

A Mississippi Delta tour is in the works, including a reading at Turnrow Books of Greenwood, a beautiful bookstore on Howard Street with an extensive collection of books about the Delta, and books by Delta writers. Turnrow also features an amazing collection of Delta Blues Music CDs.

Details will be forthcoming, so stay tuned...or subscribe to the newsletter.
